Pediatric Hematology

and Oncology

The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit is a comprehensive center for the treatment of children with blood disorders, from newborns to adolescents and young adults. Consolidating the treatment in one place eliminates the need to search for multiple specialists and enables multidisciplinary medical discussions and personalized care throughout the entire journey. The unit's team is dedicated to providing the best possible medical care to the patient and their family.

The medical team operates in various fields, including:

  1.  Expertise in a broad range of blood disorders in newborns, children, and adolescents.
  2. Familiarity with all areas of pediatric medicine.
  3. Consultations for pediatricians from various disciplines in hospitals and the community, including neurology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, cardiology, gynecology for adolescents, rheumatology, and autoimmune diseases, as well as surgical specialties like ENT, urology, and orthopedics.

The comprehensive treatment includes important aspects such as:

  1.  Diagnosis using state-of-the-art methods.
  2. Full and comprehensive treatment based on accepted recommendations in Israel and worldwide.
  3.  Access to consultation and opinions from experts in different fields in one place, provided by the unit's team.
  4.  Unique patient groups.
  5. Active collaboration with laboratories and machines in various medical centers across the country.
  6. Collaboration with community physicians, providing them with consultation for their patients and direct transfer of patient information to ensure continuous care.
  7.  Addressing emotional and educational aspects.

The unit's activities include:

  1. Anemia of various types, such as iron deficiency anemia, iron treatment (including via the vein), thalassemia - identifying carriers and treating patients, and hemolytic anemia, such as spherocytosis and G6PD deficiency.
  2. Disorders of coagulation - tendency to bleed (skin and mucosal bleeding, post-circumcision, during surgery, during the menstrual cycle) due to decreased blood platelets, impaired platelet function, impaired clotting proteins, etc.; Excess clotting like thrombosis; cerebral edema; counseling before administering medications when there is a family history of excess clotting.
  3. Neutropenia - deficiency of white blood cells, especially neutrophils, which are associated with an increased risk of bacterial infections.
  4. Bone marrow failure diseases, both inherited and acquired, such as after infections or medications.
  5. Evaluation of common findings such as lymph node enlargement, liver enlargement, and splenomegaly, from both the hematological and oncological perspectives, which require a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause.
  6. Comprehensive and timely monitoring of tumor development in a wide range of inherited and congenital diseases with an increased risk of developing tumors that require early diagnosis to allow for complete recovery.
  7. Prenatal monitoring (along with gynecologists) of fetuses with suspected hereditary diseases known to affect them during pregnancy, such as neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia due to antibodies against red blood cells, and fetal abdominal tumors.

The medical diagnosis is conducted with the help of the imaging department (including ultrasound, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine) and the clinical laboratory department (hematology laboratory, coagulation laboratory, and cell profiling laboratory, which receives samples from all over the country).

The medical treatments are provided by an experienced and skilled medical and nursing team and include:

  1. Blood transfusions.
  2. Iron treatment through the vein.
  3. Chemotherapy treatments.
  4. Procedures such as bone marrow tests.
  5. Surgical treatments by surgeons in various fields such as ENT, ophthalmology, pediatric urology, and more.
