Menstrual Disorders in Adolescent Girls

A girl's monthly period is influenced by many hormones. A disorder in any one of them could cause problems.

It is considered late if the menses haven't appeared by age 16. This could be due to disorders in the pituitary gland, or in the fallopian tube, the adrenal gland or in thyroid activity.

If the menstrual delay is accompanied by extreme stunted growth, medical clarification is urgently needed, because it could be a case of a genetic disorder called Turner's Syndrome, which once identified should be treated as soon as possible. The child should also be examined if as well as menstrual delay there is no development of secondary sexual signs (breasts and pubic hair.)

In cases of irregular menstruation, excessive menstrual bleeding and strong pain during bleeding – treatment is needed accordingly. Some girls will experience irregular menstruation during the first two years. Having said that, less than nine annual menses or a period lasting more than 45 days on a consistent basis (even in the first two years), should also require clarification.

If menstruation stops for more than six months, and especially other signs like rough hair appearing on the chin or upper lip, or obesity, it indicates a problem. Early treatment is likely to enhance results.

It is not rare to see a break in menses among girls suffering from eating disorders, intended or unintended weight loss, intensive and regular physical activity or heavy pressure at school. In these cases, if the hormonal check is normal, there is no need for pills. An improvement in nutritional state or a reduction of stress should lead to recovery.
