The Unit for Lung and Chest Tumors

The term "lung cancer" includes several different diseases, all originating as primary tumors in the chest.

Lung cancer is one of the most common tumors worldwide.

In recent years, there have been advancements in personalized oncology treatment in general and specifically in lung cancer.

At Shaare Zedek, we treat patients with lung cancer at all stages of the disease.

Newly diagnosed patients receive priority in scheduling appointments and assistance in preparing necessary tests for accurate diagnosis (biopsy, imaging tests, additional complementary tests), followed by treatment planning.

For established patients in the unit, there is a structured treatment plan and dedicated follow-up.

The unit offers personalized treatment for each patient based on the type of tumor and stage of the disease:

Sometimes a combination of several types of treatments achieves the most effective results.

Immunotherapy treatments - treatments that activate the immune system include: Pembrolizumab (Keytruda), Nivolumab (Opdivo), Ipilimumab (Yervoy), Atezolizumab (Tecentriq), Durvalumab (Imfinzi).

Biological therapy - targeted to inhibit a specific mechanism in tumor cells, based on molecular testing taken from the tumor itself during biopsy. Common mutations in lung cancer: EGFR, ALK, ROS1, KRAS, MET.

Chemotherapy treatment - treatment given by intravenous infusion aimed at impairing the growth and spread of tumor cells.

Radiation therapy - treatment using high-energy X-rays focused on specific disease sites to kill cancer cells.

Additionally, innovative clinical research treatments are available.

The oncology team convenes weekly for TUMOR BOARD meetings, with a multidisciplinary team including chest surgeons, pulmonologists, imaging physicians, radiation oncologists, and pathologists. This is to discuss each patient at a treatment crossroads, ensuring the most accurate treatment recommendations.

Furthermore, the team collaborates with additional service providers: supportive care team, psychologists, nutrition specialists, spiritual guidance, complementary medicine, and more.

We believe in maintaining a healthy routine during treatment: balanced nutrition, moderate physical activity, maintaining an active daily routine according to the patient's physical ability and mental needs, as well as returning to functional capacity after completing treatments.
