OncoYeda - Voluntary Information Service and Information Center

Dr. Dorit Izek

Oncoyeda Information Service was established in 2012 by Dr. Dorit Izek as a non-profit association, aimed at providing cancer patients and their families with the maximum relevant medical information they are interested in, clarifying it, and thereby empowering their ability to cope with the disease and the treatment process.

Rationale:

Numerous studies indicate that maximum accessibility to medical information and understanding it may reduce anxiety levels among patients and improve their ability to make informed decisions based on scientific information that matches their personal needs and preferences. The association's vision is to provide every patient with equal access to the most current and relevant information related to their specific condition.

The information service does not aim to provide any medical advice of any kind and is not a substitute for medical consultation.

Background:

The diagnosis of a life-threatening disease often accompanies a profound sense of imminent threat and loss of control. In addition to the uncertainty of the present and the lack of certainty about the future, patients and their families are exposed to a variety of unfamiliar procedures and various treatment options, requiring them to make decisions within short time frames. Seeking relevant information is a vital component in the patient's coping process with the disruption in their lives, from the moment of diagnosis through various stages of the treatment process.

However, cancer is not a single disease. There are many types of cancer, each with different behaviors and manifestations that may vary among different patients. Furthermore, each patient is a unique entity with unique informational needs arising from their specific medical condition and life experience. Demographic differences such as gender, age, education, cultural differences, and past experiences may also influence the need for different types of information among different patients. Moreover, the passage of time from diagnosis, the treatment stage the patient is in, and their personal preferences regarding their involvement in the decision-making process potentially influence the type of information they prefer to receive.

Providing relevant information tailored to these needs allows a deeper understanding of the medical aspects of the disease and assists the patient in making decisions based on scientific research that closely aligns with their needs and preferences. According to research literature, providing relevant information has led to a noticeable improvement in patient satisfaction with treatment decisions, as well as a more positive and successful coping throughout all stages of treatment. Additionally, there has been a decrease in anxiety levels, an increase in self-control, and an improvement in the patient's interaction with their family and social environment.

Therefore, there is significant importance in providing personalized information that meets the patient's expectations at different points in time throughout the disease.

Today, there is high availability of databases in the field of cancer. However, most of them are unable to provide an answer that meets the definition of relevant information for the specific patient, according to their personal needs.

Enhancing existing information by providing a service that allows the patient to properly understand the information already provided to them in writing or verbally by healthcare professionals, whether through face-to-face meetings or communication channels (phone calls, emails), will lead to a broader and deeper understanding of the situation at various stages of the disease and will enable the patient to effectively cope with the disease and be an active participant in the treatment decision-making process.
