The Neurosurgery Department

Shaare Zedek's neurosurgical team has been trained in some of the world’s leading institutions and is equipped with the most advanced technologies. The department treats severe head injuries, complex brain tumors, atrophic diseases of the Central Nervous System, such as NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus), and more.

The Neurosurgery Department has a designated operating theater which includes a new navigating system, intra-operation ultra-sound and an innovative robot enabling procedures such as tumor tissue biopsy to be carried out with great precision. The department also conducts procedures on fully awake patients, combined with electrophysiological brain tissue marking monitored by a neuropsychologist, with the aim of preserving the patient’s critical functioning during the surgery. In addition, the surgical team performs complicated lower skull operations.

These surgical procedures employ a range of methods and techniques, often integrated with doctors from other disciplines. Some of these operations use the endoscopy approach – through the nose. This method has developed significantly over the last decade and in many cases replaces the traditional open-skull surgery.

The department provides a multi-disciplinary response for severe head and multi-system injuries, including internal skull temperature measurement, surgery where appropriate and the gamut of advanced treatment available nowadays to prevent further brain damage.

The Neurosurgery Department is part of the Brain Center, which also includes the Stroke Unit and the Interventional Neuroradiology Unit (cerebral angiography), which treats patients with cerebral blood vessel diseases such as aneurisms and Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). The department works in cooperation with the Spinal Surgery Unit, the Oncology Department and other surgical departments.
