Virtual colonoscopy, also known as CT colonography, is a CT examination that allows the evaluation of the colon's space and can detect polyps or growths in the colon's lining. The procedure is similar to endoscopic colonoscopy and enables the detection of polyps with a diameter greater than 5 millimeters and growths in the colon.

The examination allows imaging of all abdominal organs. It is a non-invasive test performed under CT, where computer processing after the examination can display the entire length of the colon's lining, similar to endoscopic colonoscopy. As two CT scans are performed, the radiation level of a virtual colonoscopy is slightly higher than that of a regular abdominal CT scan. The examination is usually performed without the injection of contrast material.

After preparing the colon with laxatives (the preparation is similar to that of a regular colonoscopy), the patient undergoes a CT scan. Detailed instructions regarding the preparation are provided when scheduling the appointment.

The Procedure:

At the beginning of the examination, the colon is inflated with air. Then, a CT scan of the abdomen is performed. The patient will receive instructions on positioning during the examination.
