This is an invasive test in which a tissue sample is taken from the liver to examine under a microscope. The biopsy is performed when there are preliminary findings or when there is a liver problem that cannot be accurately diagnosed through non-invasive methods. A liver biopsy is done when there are visible masses in the liver, there are changes in the liver's structure or size, or when there is an unexplained problem with liver functions.

The procedure:

Liver biopsy can be done in several ways. In this procedure, a tissue sample can be obtained by using a special needle to cut a piece of liver tissue. Sometimes, the biopsy is taken during surgery.

The actual liver puncture is a short process that takes about fifteen minutes. The area is numbed with local anesthesia, and a thin and special needle is inserted through the skin, under the guidance of ultrasound imaging. As the area is numbed, there is usually no pain felt during the procedure. After the biopsy, the patient may experience some discomfort at the site.

The patient is usually discharged on the same day, and it is recommended to rest and avoid lifting heavy objects, physical activities, or applying heat to the area.
