There are several medical conditions in which gastrointestinal lesions develop, processes that can lead to various complications, including cancerous growths. Over the years, alternative options for surgical removal of lesions have been developed, and one of them, performed using an endoscope, is called radiofrequency ablation (RFA).

Endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a new method used in the treatment of gastrointestinal lesions. The procedure involves inserting a catheter into the affected area, whether it's in the esophagus, stomach, or rectum. The treatment is based on an electrical current that generates an electromagnetic field, causing the release of thermal energy and creating thermal damage to the tissue. The treated tissue undergoes superficial ablation (removal), and the depth of the ablation depends on the intensity of the released energy and the frequency of the current.

In the gastro-surgical unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a leading center in this field, the treatment is carried out using a device called HALO. The catheter is passed through the endoscope and positioned in front of the lesion, and then the energy (through radiofrequency waves) is delivered to the patient's affected tissue.

This therapeutic method has been used in recent years for a condition known as Barrett's esophagus, where the normal esophageal lining is replaced by a different lining, resembling that of the stomach or intestines. Changes in the esophagus can lead to intestinal metaplasia, a condition with an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer. Therefore, the removal of Barrett's esophagus and the prevention of its growth is of great importance.

In addition, our center uses this technology to treat non-responsive and sclerotic lesions in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, such as GAVE and radiation proctitis, which may not respond well to standard treatments.

The gastro-surgical unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is the first hospital in the country to use this therapeutic method and is part of the European Taskforce for using this technique.
