The Tumor Prevention Center

About

Colon cancer is one of the most common tumors in both men and women. In many cases, the tumor is a result of an ongoing process of change in the intestine’s normal membrane, which becomes a polyp and later a malignant tumor. As opposed to many other tumors, in which the term “early discovery” relates to the early stages of a cancerous tumor, early discovery programs for colon cancer are designed to also remove polyps, which are considered as tumors “waiting to happen”.
In other words, “early discovery” is before any cancer develops.
Today, it is highly recommended for the general population – particularly those at higher risk – to undergo preventative testing for colon cancer.
At the Digestive Diseases Institute at Shaare Zedek Medical Center we have set up a special center for tumor prevention, in which every patient is evaluated for risk after considering his or her test results and family history. Based on this evaluation, conducted in cooperation with gastroenterologists and geneticists, we are able offer each patient our recommendations for the future
We know there are a number of genetic syndromes connected to the prevalence of colon tumors. It is important to identify these syndromes as they could lead to additional tumors outside the colon. In some cases, it is worthwhile checking the rest of the family as well.
