Anorectal manometry is an important tool for functional assessment of the anal sphincter and rectal sensitivity in response to different pressures.

Reasons for the examination:

Patients suffering from constipation, various defecation disorders, lack of control over the anal sphincter, and more, are referred for the test.

Procedure:

During the examination, a small and flexible tube with a balloon is gently inserted into the rectum through the anal sphincter for 15-20 minutes. The tube measures pressures that indicate the functional condition of the internal and external sphincters, rectal sensitivity, and more.

The test is not painful and does not require anesthesia.

Preparation for the examination:

The patient should perform a small cleansing enema (Fleet enema) at home about two hours before the test. There is no need to change medications on the day of the examination, and no accompanying person is required to be present.
