The Geriatric Center

The geriatric center at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is divided into two main units: the Geriatric Department, which cares for patients with acute conditions, including those on mechanical ventilation with multiple underlying diseases, cognitive decline, and functional decline; and the Rehabilitation Unit, which admits patients following brain events, hip fractures, and patients with functional decline due to acute illness.

Within the geriatric center, there are four different functional units:
- Three units are dedicated to acute geriatric care, with a total of 40 inpatient beds, and the fourth unit is the geriatric rehabilitation unit, which has 9 inpatient beds. As part of the center's activities, there are also a general geriatric outpatient clinic and a memory clinic. Patients arrive at the geriatric center with acute illnesses, with many of them coming directly from the triage ward, including patients on mechanical ventilation. In addition to acute illnesses, patients often present with functional disturbances, sometimes accompanied by cognitive decline and various underlying medical conditions. Usually, patients return home after discharge. The center's team emphasizes maintaining ongoing communication with the patient's families and various stakeholders in the community during hospitalization. The center has monitoring units for up to 5 patients who require continuous nursing care during limited periods.

Geriatric Rehabilitation - This unit comprises 9 inpatient beds for patients who primarily arrive following one of the following medical conditions:
A. A stroke
B. After a hip fracture.
C. Rehabilitation following an illness with functional impairment.
