The main mission of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Shaare Zedek Medical Center is to diagnose infectious diseases, provide treatment to patients, and prevent such diseases, both acquired in the community and within the hospital. The unit's physicians actively participate in local and international clinical research, mainly focusing on new antibiotic treatments against various infectious diseases, conducted by the pharmaceutical industry. The team is actively involved in the following areas:

1. Formulation of evidence-based protocols for the use, distribution, and implementation of antimicrobial drugs.
2. Development of a comprehensive plan and advanced procedures to reduce infection rates and their implementation.
3. Instruction and supervision of medical students, interns, and residents.

The unit is also actively engaged in research activities, including conducting clinical and basic research. The unit's physicians are interested in the following research areas:

1. Hospital epidemiology and infection control.
2. Rational use of antimicrobial agents.
3. Molecular diagnostics of viral and other infectious diseases.
4. Applied biostatistics.

The unit's physicians maintain close communication with the Microbiology and Immunology Laboratory, under the management of Dr. Mark Ashush, which employs advanced methods for diagnosis and identification of infectious agents. Additionally, the unit collaborates with the research laboratory led by Prof. Yechiel Schlesinger and Dr. Yifat Elder-Yedidia, which focuses on the molecular diagnosis of various infectious diseases and the transmission mechanisms of cytomegalovirus (CMV) from the mother to the fetus.
