MRI of the small intestine (MRE)

in children

MRE is an MRI examination of the abdomen specifically designed to demonstrate the small intestine (MR Enterography).

Fasting for 6 hours before the test and drinking a substance that expands the intestine about an hour and a half before the examination are necessary. The examination itself is performed while lying on the abdomen without moving and lasts for approximately 40 minutes. Your cooperation is crucial for the success of the examination.

Please note: MRE examination is not suitable for diabetic patients. If your child has diabetes, you must immediately inform the staff to arrange a more appropriate examination.

The MRI examination is a non-radiation test. A strong magnetic field is created within the device, so no metal objects (electronic devices, coins) or pacemakers, or hearing aids should be brought into the room. Moreover, it is prohibited to undergo an MRI examination if you have recently swallowed an endoscopic capsule for the digestive system or a dummy capsule.

Preparation for the examination:

  1. Fasting for 6 hours before the examination is required. If your child takes medications at regular times, they can take the medications with a small amount of water. You can also give your child a healthy snack before starting the fasting (e.g., fruit, sandwich, healthy snack) to make fasting more comfortable for them.
  2. Please arrive at the MRI institute two hours before the examination. You will be asked to register at the institute's reception and fill out a metal screening form.
  3. Your child will change into a gown and be prepared with an enema to aid in bowel movement (Buscopan) during the examination.
  4. About an hour and a half before the examination, your child will be asked to drink a substance that fills the bowel and expands it. The medical staff will provide specific instructions on the required drinking pace. Drinking the entire amount at the correct pace is vital for the success of the examination. Therefore, even if your child feels nauseous or full, encourage them to finish the drink as instructed.
  5. Just before the examination, your child will be asked to use the restroom to empty their bladder.

Examination process:

  1. The examination is performed while lying on the abdomen without moving.
  2. Periodically, your child will be asked to hold their breath for short periods of about 20 seconds.
  3. Additionally, during the examination, a substance that slows down bowel movement will be injected, followed by a contrast material to highlight the bowel and aid in detecting areas of inflammation.
  4. The examination lasts for about 40 minutes. After the examination, your child may feel the need to use the restroom, and loose stools may occur. This is a normal reaction to the liquid they drank before the examination. This sensation will likely pass within a few hours.
  5. After the examination, your child can eat and drink as usual.

Examination results:

At the end of the examination, you will receive a CD containing the recorded images of the examination.
