Colonography

Similar to a regular colonoscopy, colonography allows for the examination of the colon. The procedure involves inserting a tube through the anus, inflating the colon, and performing two scans of the abdomen – one with the patient lying on their back and the other on their stomach. The test provides precise details about the location of any issues and the condition of the colon, offering a general view of the abdomen. Based on the findings, the most suitable treatment process can be planned accordingly.

The colonography is performed without sedation and with reduced radiation exposure. Patients are usually discharged shortly after the procedure.

It is a diagnostic test, and the results obtained are similar to those of a regular colonoscopy. However, unlike a colonoscopy, colonography does not allow for immediate treatment.

Colonography is performed:

  1. When a regular colonoscopy fails, usually right after the colonoscopy to make use of the dietary preparation the patient has undergone.
  2. To detect polyps and prevent the development of colorectal cancer.
  3. In patients with underlying conditions that prevent them from undergoing a regular colonoscopy due to potential complications.

Patients scheduled for colonography will receive detailed preparation instructions:

  1.  The patient must be on a liquid diet for 24 hours before the procedure.
  2. They should take medications to cleanse the bowels and a substance to tag the contents of the colon.

The hospital will provide each patient with a package containing all the necessary medications and materials for preparation, along with precise instructions for their use.
