The postpartum period begins immediately after birth and continues for up to six weeks. During this time you will experience a number of bodily changes and challenges:

  • Bleeding: During the first few days you may experience increased bleeding. Wide pads should be used, rather than tampons. The bleeding will lessen over time and usually lasts 5-7 weeks.
  • Stitches: Proper hygiene must be maintained. The area should be washed regularly with warm water. Different solutions are available to alleviate the pain, such as frozen pads or Esracain gel (available at pharmacies). The stitches dissolve within 7-10 days.
  • Bowel movements: Your stitches will be secure during bowel movements. Foods known to facilitate easier bowel movements include bran, tomatoes and prunes. You may occasionally use glycerin suppositories if necessary.
  • Hormonal changes: After birth, your body will body experience a sharp drop in hormonal levels, which can lead to mood swings and crying. These effects are quite normal, and usually wear off within a month without any need for treatment. In extreme cases professional counseling should be sought (nurse, family physician, gynecologist, etc.)
  • Breastfeeding and taking care of the baby: During the first few months, we recommend full breastfeeding. Set a routine for your baby and keep his or her room at 22°C.
  • Maintaining your relationship with your partner: A new baby takes up a lot of your time and attention. It's important for you and your partner that you attend to each other, have meals together and make time for conversation that focuses on your relationship and on topics not connected to your baby.
  • Medical check-up: See your gynecologist six weeks after the birth, unless you are given specific instructions otherwise.
